Biography

The Early Years ......

Michael grew up in a household that appreciated music. He started playing piano at 6 yrs, then moved onto the Cello briefly before taking up the bass at 12. His early musical years included playing in the Barrington, IL School District Orchestra and Jazz Ensembles throughout his Elementary, Middle, & High School years. During that time, Michael also played with the Schaumburg, IL Youth Orchestra. Michael developed a serious interest in Jazz in middle school studying under David Shore (Schaumburg, IL). During this time, Michael was also honored to attend the Victor Wooten Bass Camp in Tennessee. Victor is a Grammy award winning bassist.

Education ......

Michael graduated from UIC (University of Illinois-Chicago) in December, 2012 (Bachelor of Arts, Performing Arts). He studied under Stewart Miller while at UIC. Stewart is a well known bassist with the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic (Orbert Davis, Director). Stewart also plays regularly in Chicago jazz venues and festivals.

A defining moment for Michael was freshman year (at UIC) when he found his way to the Sunday night open jam at the Velvet Lounge (on Cermak in Chicago). Fred Anderson (tenor sax) owner of the Velvet, was notoriously generous with his time by supporting young, upcoming jazz musicians. His style of music focused on hard bop, swing, and free jazz. It was there that Michael had the opportunity to jam with, learn from, and develop long lasting friendships with some of Chicago's best Jazz musicians. Also, during this time, Michael was honored to perform at the Auditorium Theater (in March, '12) with the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic Orchestra (directed by Orbert Davis).
